We found a ringnecked pheasant in a neighbor's yard on Sunday. Unfortunately it had already met with one of the cats that roam the area, and was hurt. My friend, Lisa, called animal control to take it away to safety. We later learned that someone nearby had five of these birds in cages - for what reason, none of us can figure out - and he had then released them. Why would he set them free in this neighborhood? He could have taken them to the woods nearby. I hope the rest flew off to safer places.

I've never seen one of those in real life, but now I can claim to have seen one on a blog.

Amy, What a wonderful sight that beautiful bird must have been under your feeder. I've never observed Pheasants "in the wild" except in western states --- was surprised to see that Sibley has them across the NE US too. Thanks for the photographs and for sharing this pleasant pheasant.
My one Grouse sighting in Tennessee was of a bird probably escaped from a nearby "hunting" preserve. Hope your bird was an local bird and that you have numerous ones of his kind as regular feeders in your yard.

This was my first sighting. I have caught (very) partial glimpses of them in the wild, but we've never had one visit the feeder. Maybe it has something to do with the snow cover this year?

Wait. Is a grouse the same thing as a pheasant? I'm confused. We have grouse in our woods but they don't look like this pheasant. I am not a birder so wouldn't know the answer...

I flashed on the photo and thought you were posting an Audubon painting.
Cheers.

Pheasant and grouse are related but not the same, Marie.
Randall, the pattern and color are painterly. And the light was dim.
