My high school French was a big help with guessing (hooray for multiple choice), also all the weird historical medieval novels I read as a youth, so I recognize the names of the parts of armor for battle horses, for example.
If you play it long enough, you will begin to see a few of the same words. Then you actually learn them if you didn't know them already. Every high school English teacher should promote this site!

pennate = winged
duiker = antelope
pleasance = secluded garden
osculation = kiss
bezant = gold coin
charlock = wild mustard
paraph = flourish after signature
